Jonathan Weinzapfel is the 33rd Mayor of Evansville. He’s currently serving his second four-year term. He was reelected with a historic 85% of the vote on November 6, 2007.

As his top priority, Mayor Weinzapfel seeks to give the people of Evansville more input in their government and greater access to city officials. So in his second month in office, he started the highly successful Traveling City Hall Program. Each month, The Mayor and city department heads visit a different neighborhood. The Traveling City Hall Program gives citizens an opportunity to ask questions and voice concerns one on one. It continues to receive enthusiastic support from the community.

Another important goal for Weinzapfel is Downtown revitalization. The Ohio Riverfront is being rebuilt with the new or expanded corporate headquarters of Old National Bank, Vectren and American General Finance. There are new or expanded entertainment opportunities like the U.S.S. LST 325, the Pigeon Creek Greenway Passage, the Koch Family Children’s Museum of Evansville and the Evansville African-American Museum. Downtown is welcoming new residents through the Loft Program with developments like the Renaissance on Main, the Plaza and the Meridian Plaza. There is a cluster of new restaurants, bars and a boutique hotel to anchor an entertainment district that was developed by Casino Aztar.

Weinzapfel also is focusing on neighborhood revitalization though the Front Door Pride program. The program has four basic goals: improve the curb appeal of the neighborhood, increase household disposable income and household wealth, and create and maintain diverse, mixed-income neighborhoods.

Weinzapfel believes regional economic development is important so he has worked with other community leaders to create a strategic plan not only for the city, but also for all of Southwestern Indiana. He was instrumental in forming the Economic Development Coalition for Southwest Indiana and serves as its Co-chairman.

Weinzapfel also started the Evansville Education Roundtable to provide a community-wide dialog on improving education. The Roundtable is working on two goals: to achieve a 100% high school graduation rate and to improve access to post-secondary education.

Prior to being elected Mayor, Weinzapfel was appointed State Representative for District 76 in 1999 and was twice elected to the position. He graduated with a Juris Doctorate from the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. While working as an aide to Congressman Frank McCloskey, Weinzapfel earned a Master’s Degree from Georgetown University. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from Indiana University. Weinzapfel graduated from Reitz Memorial High School and attended St. Philip Elementary School.

Mayor Weinzapfel is 42 years old and lives near the University of Evansville with his wife, Patricia, and their three children, Nathaniel, Benjamin and Eleanor.
